At the age of twenty-two, James enlisted at Arcadia, New York on August 8, 1862 to serve for three years. He was mustered in as a private in Company E of the 111th New York Infantry on August 20th.
After his regiment was surrendered when the garrison of Harpers Ferry fell on September 15th, James was confined at Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois to await his period of parole. However, before the regiment was released at the end of November, James deserted his regiment on November 21st.
James spent the rest of his life in Sodus working as a carpenter.
