Services for Sam Brightwell, Springer, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013 at the First Southern Baptist Church of Springer, with Rev. Ron Elmore officiating. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park.


Samuel Clell Brightwell was born June 10, 1934 to Urey and Eastle (Clarkston) Brightwell, and passed from this life on Aug. 3, 2013 at Mercy Memorial Hospital. Sam was born in Protem, Mo. at his parents' home. He attended grade school in Protem, and graduated from Forsyth High School in 1952.


Sam joined the USAF in October 1953, and was honorably discharged in September 1957, during this time earning the National Defense Service and Good Conduct Medal. While stationed at the Ardmore Air Base in Gene Autry, he met and married the former Barbara Smith on Dec. 1, 1956.


Sam was a man who left his mark in this world. He worked with community youth and was a member of the Optimist Club of Ardmore, serving as president. He received many honors for his volunteer work. Sam also worked for ONG for 19 years, and retired from VE Enterprise in 2003. Sam enjoyed pheasant and deer hunting, gardening and working with red cedar making unique pieces. He was a bird watcher, and enjoyed the outdoors. Sam collected Skelly memorabilia. He was well known in the area, and had many friends. He loved his family very much. He will truly be missed by his family, friends and community.


He left behind his wife Barbara of the home; daughter Brenda; son Bruce; granddaughter Cassie Glave and husband Caleb; great-granddaughters Karissa and Avallonis; sister Dorothy Godwin; brothers Delmar and wife Wanda, Donnie and wife Delene, Ken and wife Josie; sisters-in-law Roberta Cullins, Kathy Brightwell, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.


Sam was preceded in death by his parents; brother Jerry; sister Janith Kay; brothers-in-law Tony Cullins, Jay Godwin, and Jim Smith and wife Winnie; son-in-law Steve Russell; in-laws Robert and Gussie Smith; nephews Gary Robinson Jr., Joe Cutbirth, and Henry Tilly; and niece Janice Lynn. Pallbearers will be Kenny Shores, Paul Brightwell, Ken Brightwell, Delmer Brightwell, Winford Curry and Jim Rozzell. Honorary bearers are Jimmy Kinsey, Jim Marshall, and Mike Haggard.
