Ruth Van Wyk, 82, of Leighton, Iowa, died Saturday, August 3, 2013, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

She was born April 6, 1931, in Mahaska County, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Irene Andringa Nieuwsma.

On February 2, 1950, she was united in marriage to John G. Van Wyk at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa.

Ruth was a homemaker who had a servant's heart, and she gave of her time and talents to many organizations, including Gideon Auxiliary, Farm Bureau, and playing her accordion at area care facilities. She was always active in the church she and John were attending by helping with Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She was a member of the Omega Church in Oskaloosa. Ruth loved children and felt called to care for and tell the story of Jesus to as many as she could. She and John had several foster children throughout the years, and she always made sure the neighborhood children had a ride to church and Sunday School. Ruth was also a very talented musician and could play many instruments by ear. She was especially gifted at playing the accordion and won accolades at the Iowa State Fair. She devoted her life to God and her family.

Her family includes her husband of over 63 years, John G. Van Wyk of Leighton; five children, Rodney (& Pauline) Van Wyk of Ankeny, Iowa, Juanita (& Joe) Kuhns of Ankeny, Beverly (& Butch) Van Der Veer of Oskaloosa, Roger (& Rebecca) Van Wyk of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, and Julie (& Colby) Bryant of Ames, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; her brother, Norman Nieuwsma of Pella, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Harold, Gelmer, and Arvin Nieuwsma; and a sister, Lois Vos.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at 10:30 A.M. at the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa, with Pastor Dave Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Tuesday after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Tuesday from 5 to 7 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
