Lois graduated from Pella High School with the class of 1957. On June 6, 1957, she was united in marriage with Raymond G. Vos in Pella. They were blessed with three sons: Darwin, Dwight, and Dennis. The family lived in Sully, Newton, Washington, IA, Worthington, MN, and St. James, MN.
Her dream since she was ten years old was to be a hairdresser. She graduated from Thompson Beauty College in Fairmont, Minnesota in 1973, after having her children. She worked in Minnesota for seven years then moved to Newton where she opened a salon called The Hair Factory in 1982. Later she moved to Pella where she had a salon in her basement until retiring in 2011 after thirty-eight years in the business.
Lois helped her husband, Ray, with many remodeling projects and worked as a volunteer for an organization called CRWRC for many years, helping disaster victims of tornadoes and floods.
Lois loved and collected poems as did her mother, sister, and brothers. Her hobbies included sewing, decorating, gardening, and baking chocolate chip cookies for her family. She spent a lot of time babysitting and enjoying her two grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory are: her children: Dwight of Newton, Dennis Vos and his wife, Mici, of Polk City; two grandchildren: Cassie Jo Vos and Cody Allen Vos; one sister, Ruth (John) Van Wyk; one brother, Norman Nieuwsma; two sisters-in-law: Thressa Nieuwsma and Luella Nieuwsma; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Irene Nieuwsma; parents-in-law, Joe and Elizabeth Vos; her husband, Ray, in 1998; her son, Darwin, in 2011; her three brothers: Harold Nieuwsma, Gelmer Nieuwsma, and Arvin Nieuwsma; and two sisters-in-law: Mae Nieuwsma and Martha Nieuwsma.
