Roy William Layer, 88, of 332 State St., died at 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Pekin Manor.

Born July 17, 1914, in Dallas City to William and Mary Baker Layer, he married Patricia Elizabeth Schaefer on June 29, 1936, in Peoria. She died Sept. 18, 1997, in Pekin.

He also was preceded in death by one son, Robin, on Nov. 27, 1982, in Peoria; one granddaughter; five sisters; and three brothers.

Surviving are three sons, Walter 'Butch' of Creve Coeur, Richard (and Ruth) of Denver and Larry (and Anita) of East Moline; two brothers, Harry (and Mary) of California and Merlin of Fayetteville, Ark.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He customized railroad cars for 33 years with the Western Weighing Inspection Bureau, based out of Peoria, retiring in 1976.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lakeside Cemetery. The Rev. Gary Ford will officiate. There will be no visitation. Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
