The Chico Enterprise (Chico, California) 17 Aug 1928, Friday Page 2: Fall On Third Rail Kills Father of 7. Stumbling over a third rail of the Sacramento Northern Railway company, Simon Peter Wertz, 38, father of seven children, was killed instantly yesterday afternoon. The accident occurred when Wertz was running to help in controlling a fire, the origin of which has not been determined, on the Sierra airport. He was employed on an almond huller in the immediate district by Steve Meline at the time of his death.

Witness declare that Wertz was probably blinded by the smoke and failed to see the third rail. His body fell over the third rail, his hands grasping the main rail, allowing the entire charge of electricity to pass through his body.

Meline endeavored to free the man and a second tragedy was averted when he realized the danger of grasping the body with his hands. He called for a fence post. The body was pried from the rails with the post and respiratory methods attempted.

The Westfall ambulance was automated, and although a number of men, including Jerome Schwartz and A.E. Hastings, who accompanied to the body to Chico, continued efforts to revive Wertz, they were unsuccessful. Wertz was pronounced dead by Dr. N.T. Enloe after he and Dr. Frederick Oldberg had tried to save him.

An inquest will be held in the Municipal building tonight by Deputy Coroner D.L. Westfall.

The family has been in Chico for the last three weeks, camping on the Meline ranch. They came her from Mt. Shasta City. The electrocuted man was a native of San Jose and was a member of the Santa Rosa Camp of the Woodmen of the World.

Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Mary Wertz, and seven children, the oldest 11, Ruth, Frankie, Harold, Alice, Donald, Violet and Carl; the mother, Mrs. T.O. Marcott of Durham, and the following brothers and sisters: U.S. Wertz of Mt. Shasta City, Howard Wertz of Cottage Grove, Ore.; James Wertz of Chico; Mrs. R. Engstrom of Albany, Ore.; S.S. Wertz of Santa Rosa, Mrs. Esther Johnstone of Chico, and Mrs. Goldie Dawson of Santa Rosa.
