Matilda Pettit, who became the wife of Levi Ward Reed, was the daughter of Ethan and Margaret Pettit. Her father, Ethan Pettit, in his journal records her name as "Matilda Pettit"--no middle name. He does record his daughter "Mary Ann Pettit" with both names. In none of the Pettit family records is she identified as Matilda EVE Pettit. This appears to be a case of adding to the mother (Matilda Pettit Reed) the middle name of her daughter (Matilda Eve Reed Baldwin). For a discussion of this issue, see Robert R.
