Martin was an illegitimate child of Katharina Speck on 2 November 1838 (different from his grave, but that is what is listed on his birth certificate). Because of his illigetimate status he had little chance or owning land or making a good life for himself. Therefore, he immigrated at the age of 15 with his uncle, Michael Speck. On 15th of Feb 1853 they both received permission it immigrate and registered for passports. They arrived in the United States on the 23 of April 1853.
In 1860 he was living with his Uncle, Anthony Speck and family in Spencer, Jennings County, Indiana. His occupation was listed as "Apprenctice".
The US Civil War Draft Registration Records, 1863-1865 lists a Martin Herbst born approx 1841 in Germany. He was living in Marion, Jennings County, Indiana.Was engaged in farming in the state of Indiana, until the year 1865, when he came to St. Cloud. There he was employed by the Freight Company, in drawing supplies for the frontier forts, until 1871, when he came to Glendorado Township, Benton County, and took a claim. There he met and married Caroline Ann Balder and had 7 children: Joseph, Adolph, Alma, Charles, Clara, Albert, and William.
