He was born August 17, 1922 in Wheeler, Arkansas to James Arthur and Sarah Katie (Allred) Fields.
Gene received his early education from Greenland Elementary near Fayetteville, AR. Gene joined the Navy on September 12, 1942 and proudly served his country aboard the USS Troilus. He was honorably discharged on December 11, 1945.
He married Henrietta Gertrude Maples on June 29, 1946. Shortly after the birth of their only child they made their home in Sunnyside, WA. It was here in 1956 that Gene started his career with what was known as the Oregon-Washington Telephone Company. He retired after twenty-eight years working as a lineman. Gene was very active in the Assembly of God Church.
He is survived by his son, Eddie Fields (Julia) of Cashmere, one grandson Lorin Fields of Los Angeles, CA, one granddaughter Wendi Fields of Portland, OR and a sister LaWanda Fulfer (Jay) of Springdale, AR. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Willis, James, Dale and Wayne; two sisters Irene Russell and Sylvia Neu and his wife, Gertrude.
Graveside service will be held Friday, August 2, 2013 at 1:30 P.M. at the Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside. Memorial service will be Friday, August 2, 2013 at 2:30 at the Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside, WA.
