Joseph was married to Sarah M. Cochran Adams on September 3, 1876 in Georgia. Both Joseph and Sarah were born in Georgia. They had 6 children all born in Georgia: Lewis Franklin Adams, William W. Adams, George Roberts Adams, Emmett Lawrence Adams, Sallie Adams, & Eunice Adams. Sometime between 1887 & 1888, Joseph moved his family to Smith County, Texas. For some reason William did not come to Texas with them and he could have died as an infant. In 1888 they have another daughter in Texas, Dollie Adams. His wife Sarah also dies in 1888. On August 11, 1889, Joseph remarries, Emma E. Crotsenburgh. In 1892, Joseph and Emma have a son, Bob P. Adams.
