He was born about 1662 in Sussex, England and was most likely related to the May family of that area. The May family also had sheriffs in Sussex in the 1500's and 1600's. In 1668, at the age of 6, he came from Bristol, England on the ship, "Frances and Mary", as an indentured servant to work on a plantation owned by Benjamin Rozer in Charles County, Maryland. By 1683, he had made his way after some years of servitude, to Roxbury, Massachusetts. He took the Covenant, at the age of 23, joining Eliot's Church in Roxbury on 7 June 1685. He married Sarah Hadlock about 1686 and they had 11 children. John was one of the 13 pioneers that went on 5 April 1686 from Roxbury, Massachusetts to New Roxbury (later Woodstock), Connecticut, where he settled on Lot No. 36 (15 acres) to farm. He was a husbandman, proprietor and a deacon in his church. His will was recorded in 1723 there.
