Following a brief illness, Mrs. Harriet Elizabeth Hartley, 70 years old, one of the best known pioneer women residents of Delaware county, died Saturday night at 11 o'clock at the home of her son, Thomas J. Hartley, five miles northwest of Muncie. Mrs. Hartley was born in Henry county March 8, 1841. She had lived in Delaware county since 1865. She was the widow of the late Benjamin F. Hartley, and is survived by two sons, H. D. and Thomas J. Hartley, and one daughter, Mrs. J. L. Sollars, all of near Muncie. The funeral will be conducted in the Mt. Olive church, Tuesday morning at 9:30 o'clock, and burial will be made in Beech Grove cemetery, Henry county. From: Muncie Morning Star, Mon., Jan. 29, 1912.

Her mother, Dinah, rode on horseback from Virginia to Henry County. Her father, Thomas Gough, came to Henry County in 1835 where he practiced medicine and also farmed. Later Thomas sold his farm and retired at Luray, IN. He was a justice of the peace for several years.
Harriet married Benjamin F. Hartley, February 23, 1863 in Henry County, IN. Benjamin was the son of Elisha and Sarah (Emerson) Hartley, both natives of Virginia. Benjamin F. owned and farmed 194 acres. In 1867 he located on a farm in Harrison Township. Benjamin supported Democrats in politics. It was noted that Benjamin was a kind and loving father, and a devoted husband. He was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 74, Muncie. His remains lie in Beech Grove cemetery, Henry County, IN.
Harriet was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. The U. S. Census 1880 shows Harriet Hartley as widowed. She continued to live on the old homestead with her family members.
Harriet's granddaughters, Winnie and Edith Hartley had fond memories of their grandmother teaching them handiwork and cooking. She made a christening dress of coarse cotton with a draw string for their brother, Harley Del Hartley.
Edith Hartley Nutting spoke of her grandmother with love and admiration. She was known as "Aunt Hat." "Harriet Gough Hartley cared for the sick, attended to the needs of her family and neighbors with loving kindness and skill."
Granddaughter, Winnie Hartley Harvey, was an accomplished artist.
