Eunice Outen Abney Thompson, 97, passed away peacefully July 10, 2013.

Eunice was born in Fairfield County, the first child born to the late Arthur W. Sr. and Emma G. Outen.

She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and Benedict College in Columbia.

At an early age, she was baptized as a member of First Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia. During her lifetime, she lived in Columbia, Florence, Charleston, Sumter and Washington, D.C., residing in Atlanta for the past eight years until her passing. She was a devoted educator and church worker.

A librarian by profession, she enjoyed reading, and exhibited perfect diction with an extensive vocabulary. Eunice devoted her life to serving others.

She had been honored through numerous awards and recognitions for steadfast support and productive fundraising for Benedict College, her alma mater, and Morris College in Sumter.

Eunice was a Christian woman in word and deed. Involved in her church, First Baptist Missionary Church, she read her Bible, sang with the choir, prepared communion, was a loyal deaconess, supported Vacation Bible School, and was a friend and mentor to many.

She was blessed with two outstanding husbands: for 38 years, the Rev. James J. Abney, who passed in 1967; and later, Everett Thompson, who passed in 1999.

Eunice was the family matriarch, a devoted sister, mother and friend.

Eunice was preceded in death by her sister, Amelia; brother-in-law, Charles; brother, Otis; nephew, Charles "Chuckie;" sister-in-law, Hazel; and extended family member, Creswell Hammond.

Eunice is survived by one brother, Arthur Jr.; children through marriage, Everett Jr., Cortez and Cheryl Thompson; grandsons, Napoleon "Tre" and Marcus Coleman; nieces, Cynthia Franklin (Charles) and Francine Greer (Marvin); a nephew, Arthur III; many cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Miss Eunice will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and loving spirit. She will be cherished for a life well lived.

Donations may be made to Benedict College and/or Morris College in memory of Eunice Thompson.

Memorial service: First Baptist Missionary Church, 219 Washington St., Sumter.
