Grover Pioneer Passes Away
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept 5 at 11 a.m. in the Grover Ward chapel for Annie Laura Thompson Hurd, 84, wife of Arnold Hurd, who died Sept. 2, 1968, following an illness of several months.
Interment was in the Roy Utah Cemetery.
An obituary will be published next week.
Funeral Services Held at Grover For Laura Hurd
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Sept 4, 1968m at 11 a,m. in the Grover Ward Chapel by Counselor Ralph Hemmert for Annie Laura Thompson Hurd, who died Sept 2 in the Star Valley LDS Hospital in Afton at age 84. Mrs Hurd had been in poor health for some time. Burial was in the Roy, Utah Cemetery.
She was born May 4, 1884 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the daughter of Mansel Hardy Thompson and Sarah Ann Thompson.
When she was a young girl, her father was called by the president of the LDS Church to go to Mexico to help settle the territory. She lived most of her younger life there.
On May 8, 1909 she married Arza Knight. She was the mother of four children, two sons, Wilford A. Knight and Joseph Knight, and two daughters, Chloe and Annie Laura. Three of these children; Joseph, Chloe and Annie Laura preceded her in death.
Laura's life was not an easy one; she endured many hardships. While she and her first husband lived in Arizona, their home was taken up in a hurricane in the middle of the night and lifted over a fence. She carried a scar the remainder of her life from this accident. They lost a baby daughter while living there.
In June 1913 she and her husband and their three children came to Salt Lake City to go to the temple, and while she was in Utah her husband contracted typhoid fever and died. Laura and her children remained in Utah where she got employment sacking salt at the salt works. She was an accomplished seamstress and worked at this to help make a living. She later became a beauty operator in Salt Lake City.
She married John W. Butcher. they were married only a few years when he died, leaving her a widow again.
Laura met Arnold Hurd while she was visiting with Mr and Mrs Jim McGavin. They were later married on Nov 17, 1950. She came to Grover at this time where she was lovingly accepted into Arnold's family. In return she has shown much love and affection to them.
Laura was blessed with a pair of creative hands. these she used in doing and making things for other people, her family, her friends and children in the Primary Children's Hospital. Many homes were privileged to receive some of the handiwork she gave away.
Mrs Hurd lived a very active life. Along with raising her family she has given much service in the church. She was work director in the relief society in Salt Lake City.
She is survived by her husband, Arnold, of Grover; one son, Wilford A. Knight, Salt Lake City; seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren; the following stepchildren; Mrs Earl (LaRue) Nebeker, Salt Lake City; Mrs Willard (Lorna) Nield, Afton; Doyle Hurd, Grover; Mrs George (Virginia) Astle, Wendell, Idaho; 24 step-grandchildren and a number of step-great grandchildren.
