Gary Schley Byrd was born on February 12, 1938 in Pascagoula, Mississippi and departed this life on July 24, 2013 surrounded by his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Murdock Schley and Esther Ward Byrd; siblings, Donis Ward Byrd, Nelwyn Byrd Taylor and Ronard Knox (Rocky) Byrd; parents in law, William T. and Sue Canfield Bodden; brother and sisters in law, Tommy and Carolyn Bodden, Wanda Byrd and Alice Byrd.

Gary is survived by his wife of 57 years, Norma Sue Bodden Byrd and his daughters, Sue Ellen (Kenny) Moore, Lenore (Donnie) Murray and Laura (Trevor) Cooley. He is survived by his grandchildren, Melissa Moore (Paul Fowler), John (Leslie) Moore, Gene Warren (Danielle Lonneman), Richard Murray and Griffin Murray along with great grandchildren, Gage Miller, Connor McLeod and Maggie Fowler.
Gary is also survived by a sister, Lynda Byrd (Frank) Sharbrough; brothers and sisters in law, Hugh and Udean Bodden and Kathy and Bill Allen as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gary was a lifelong resident of Pascagoula and graduated from Pascagoula High School in 1956. He was employed as a General Ship Superintendant at Ingalls Shipbuilding supervising the building of naval ships, including the USS Merrill and the USS Kidd and as the Chief Production Engineer for the USS Ticonderoga and USS Vincennes.
In his spare time and after his retirement, Gary was a residential home designer designing many homes in Jackson County especially following Hurricane Katrina. He was a former member of the Mississippi National Guard and BPO Elks Lodge #1120. Gary was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Pascagoula where he served as an Elder and Trustee as well as on the Property Team. He will be remembered as a dedicated and hard worker, loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and cousin. Gary will be greatly missed.

A visitation will be held on Monday, July 29, 2013 from 9:00 a.m.- 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Pascagoula, Mississippi. The memorial service will follow immediately at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Matt Mitchell officiating. Interment will be in Macphelah Cemetery. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers are: Al Allen, Bill Allen, David Allen, Michael Allen, Hugh Bodden, Sr., Hugh Bodden, Jr., Lance Bodden, Vann Bodden, Randy Torjusen and Richard Torjusen.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund. The family would also like to thank the nurses and patient care assistants of Singing River Hospital Cardiac Unit (2 Northeast); Dr. Pavel Khimenko and staff; the J. E. Turner Heart Clinic staff; Dr. Joel Brunt; Denise Tyler, SRH Case Manager; and Rhonda Deschesnes and Shelia Hinton of Hospice of Light. Heritage Funeral Home in Escatawpa/Moss Point, MS is in charge of arrangements.
