MINING HEIRESS

Born the only daughter of legendary Canadian Miner (Cobalt and Hollinger Mines) Duncan McMartin and his wife, Iva Alderson McMartin Hilborn of Montreal, Melba was raised first in Montreal then New York City. She was married several times to a series of New Yorkers. First, Leander Riddle Lee, then advertising executive Thornton Wallace Orr and finally to financier David I. Van Buren.

Melba predeceased her mother, Iva Alderson McMartin Hilborn, both of her brothers, Allen and Duncan McMartin and her two children, Melba, Jr. and Wallace, Jr. She lived in Bermuda for many years on the legendary estate of Perot's Island, at Riddell Bay in Southampton, dying there of heart ailment in June 23, 1947.

Services were held at St. James Church in Pembroke, Bermuda. Burial in St. John's Cemetery in Bermuda. (based on obit ed.New York Times, June 24, 1947)

Note: Melba was also "Melba, Sr." as her daughter was "Melba, Jr."-- She was known for her stunning good looks, cheery personality and family loyalty, she was especially close to her mother, Iva Alderson McMartin Hilborn, the strong matriarch of the family.
