SOCIALITE AND PHILANTHROPIST
Eldest daughter of Joseph Willan Alderson and Jessie MacDonald, Iva was born in Gordon Lake, near Sault Sainte Marie, Ont. She married first on 10 Dec. 1902 in Sault Sainte Marie, Ont. to Duncan McMartin (1868-1914)and became a young widow after his untimely death at age 47 in 1914. They had three children, Allan (1903-1990), Duncan(1909-1979) and Melba (1903-1947).

Iva led a very colorful life. After Duncan McMartin and his brother, John McMartin, participated in the founding of many of Canada's early and richest mining ventures (including the silver at Cobalt Mines, Hollinger Gold Mines at Porcupine area and multiple silver, nickel, copper and gold mines worldwide, McMartin family fortunes changed dramatically. The family moved first from rural Ontario to Montreal, then to New York City as their empire grew. Iva became a socially prominent hostess in each city and was known for her lavish lifestyle and jewelry collection.

After Duncan McMartin's untimely death, she married a second time on 5 Mar. 1925 in London, England, to New Yorker hosiery manufacturer and Wall Street investor, Jerome S. Hilborn. The couple had a picturesque private wedding at St. Martins of the Field Church with service music specially composed for the occasion. This couple had no children. They focused their lives on living the gilded side of New York in the glittery interwar years. They had stylish homes in both New York and Bermuda for many years. After Jerome Hilborn died in 1952 at their stately home, "Mayfair" in Pembroke, Bermuda, Iva remained in Bermuda. She continued her travels and extensive charitable activities. She died in Bermuda four years after her second husband, in 1956. Both are buried in the churchyard of St. Johns, Pembroke, Bermuda along with other family members, her two sons and their families and daughter Melba, who predeceased her mother there.
