Abraham Whitmer was the son of David Whitmer, a German Methodist minister, who was born in 1754 in Pennsylvania, then a British colony, and died in 1820 in Ohio. David Whitmer married Susannah Kauffman in 1805. She was born in 1773 in Pennsylvania, British Colonial America, and died in 1850 at age 77 after the census was taken that year on September 9th. She was residing at her son Abraham's home in St. Joseph County, Indiana according to the 1850 census record found in familysearch.org. She was presumed to be buried just inside the south gate in Sumption Prairie Cemetery, but this is not confirmed by cemetery records.

Abraham and his wife Catherine were married in Dayton, Ohio on October 7, 1827, and moved to Indiana in 1831, settling in Greene Township. Abraham was the presiding elder of the German Baptist, Church of the Brethren, Oak Grove Congregation, commonly known as Dunkards.

Abraham was one of seven children. A sister, Esther Witmer Kauffman, has a memorial on findagrave, #35374057.

Other siblings are named by Daniel W. Kauffman, son of Esther. They are Daniel, Jacob, John, David, and Susan. None are identified on findagrave.
