Also called the Third MO Cavalry , under Capt. Lea He was in the battle of Newtonia sep 1862 and sustained mortal wounds 8 Jan 1863 at Springfield, He was left to be cared for by the federals. He died a prisoner in the court room Hospital.

supposed to be buried in Springfield National Cemetery , but there is no record or stone. His sister in law tried to visit him to bring him blankets and care for him, but was refused because Josiah's brother Henry Mac Beason was in the Confederate Army.
