He can be seen as John in his 1880 census. Don't know if he is a William John or a John William though.
Obituary from The Steubenville Weekly Gazette for Fri., June 4, 1909 reads:
WILLIAM BARCUS
William Barcus, was born in Wellsburg July 16, 1823; died at the home of his son, Frank, in Brilliant, on May 25, 1909, age 85 years and 10 months. His funeral took place Thursday May 27, short services being held at the residence of his son, following which the remains were conveyed to the M.E. church at Hopewell, where Rev. Houck conducted the services, when his remains were laid to rest beside those of his wife, who preceded him a few years. He leaves five sons and one daughter and a large number of grandchildren; also one brother Daniel of Florida, and two sisters Nancy and Rebecca of Wellsburg. He passed away with the full assurance of the Christian faith.
