He was born in Bradford, England but emigrated to Australia in 1912. At the outbreak of war he returned to England as one of 6000 Australian munitions workers. During the voyage he caught a cold which he was never to shake off. He was employed at H.M. Munitions, Shotton and lodged at 23 Cherry Road, Boughton, Chester. After only doing three shifts he became too ill to work. He died of pneumonia in hospital. As an Australian, who had gone abroad to serve his country his grave is under the care of the Australian Section of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
