Marion Anthony Benke, 82, passed away Nov. 22, 2003, at Marian Medical Center West.

Marion was born Oct. 10, 1921, in La Junta, Colo. As a young lad he delivered newspapers to help earn money for his family during the depression years. As a teenager, during the summer, he worked for the "steel gang" laying railroad track. Marion was a star football player and helped his high school team win the state championship during one year of his high school football career. After high school he was employed with Gulf Oil Company.

Marion served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army as an infantryman in the European Theater. He served 42 months, 13 of those months overseas. He spent 54 days on the front lines during the war with Germany. He was awarded the European Theater of Operations Service Ribbon with two Battle Stars, the Combat Infantryman/s Badge and the Good Conduct Medal. Marion was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army at Fort Logan, Colo.
