Civil War. He was a private in Company I of the 69th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to Adjutant, Field and Staff, on July 11, 1864. He kept a record of the 69th in his diary which eventually became A Brief History of the 69th Regiment Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteers from Its Formation until Final Muster out of the United States Service. It was later published by D. J. Gallagher and Company in Philadelphia in 1889. It contained his entries throughout the war. Particularly powerful are the entries for Gettysburg. He died at the age of 75.
