DEATH SUMMONS CAME UNEXPECTEDLY
Mrs. F. C. Bates Died Suddenly at DuBois, Pa.
ILLNESS OF FIVE SHORT DAYS
Terminated Fatally for a Worthy Randolph Woman -- The Sad Ending of a Visit -- Funeral This Afternoon
News of the death of Mrs. Frank C. Bates which occurred at 9:15 o'clock Tuesday morning at the home of her daughter in DuBois, Pa., came as a shock to that lady's many friends in this village.
Mrs. Bates went to DuBois about two months ago to visit her daughter, Mrs. W. L. Calkins. She was accompanied by her daughter Florence, and the two were looking forward with pleasure to their return home, which was to have been made soon. She had been suffering from a cold which was not regarded as serious but bronchial pneumonia developed and after a severe illness of five days death came to her relief. The first intimation received by friends here that all was not well was the news of dissolution which reached this village on Tuesday.
Anna (sic) Churchill was the daughter of Cullen D. and Eunice Brown Churchill and was born May 28, 1851, at Ellington, Chautuauqa county. She was united in marriage with Frank C. Bates on May 28, 1871, and one year later moved to Randolph. She occupied the same house in Fifth avenue to which she came as a bride of one year, down to the time of her death. Mr. Bates died September 24, 1903. Mrs. Bates is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Myrth Calkins of Dubois and Miss Florence Bates of Randolph; one son, Ormal W. Bates of Buffalo; two grandchildren living in DuBois; two sisters, Mrs. Marcus Thatcher of Ellington and Mrs. Daphne Heald of Moline, Mo.; one brother, Lester Churchill of Ellington; two half brothers, Albro Churchill of Ellington, and Willis C. Churchill of Denver, Col.; and two step brothers, Nathan and Eugene VanDusen of Rose Hill, Kan.
Mrs. Bates was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and an estimable woman whose many Christian virtues are too well known to need recital here. She was active in church work and gave moral support to every cause which had for its aim the uplifting and betterment of mankind. She was a doting mother and the family will have the sympathy of all in their sudden bereavement.
The remains were brought here on Erie train 7 at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, and the funeral will be held at 2 o'clock this Friday afternoon from the home in Fifth avenue. Rev. H. L. Dunlavy, pastor of the M. E. church, will officiate, and burial will be made in Randolph cemetery.
