Large Funeral for Prominent Fessenden Farmer Conducted. Steven James Litke, 58, a prominent farmer of West Norway Township, north of Fessenden for many years was laid to rest Sunday at Hillside cemetery. He died March 6 at a Fargo hospital, following a serious operation he underwent several weeks earlier.
Rites were conducted by the Rev. Theo. Ova of Fargo, assisted by Rev. Mark Jensen and Rev. G. W. Pust of Fessenden, from the First Baptist Church of this city. Pallbearers included Atlee Tanner, Ben Rogelstad, Fred J. Mohr, Geo. E. Kunkel, Chas. F. Buerge and Edw. W. Vancura.
Special music was furnished by a mixed quartet composed of Mrs. Otto G. Krueger, Miss Robinette Rappuhn, Fred B. Paul and W. F. Strobel. A very large floral display was presented in his honor, and a large concourse of friends attended the services.
Born Oct 13, 1881, near Mankato, Minn., Mr. Litke was the son of Mary and Joseph Litke. In 1902 he came to Wells County, settling on a farm south of Fessenden. In 1904 he was united in marriage with Anna Vosen, who preceded him in death, passing on in 1906.
In the spring of 1907, Mr. Litke went west, spending some time in Montana and then in Canada. He returned to Wells County in 1915.
In 1917 he was united in marriage with Mary Pepple of Fessenden and they resided on a farm near Sykeston for one year. In 1918 they moved to a farm three miles north of Fessenden, which has been their home ever since.
Mr. Litke had been ill about a year, then became more serious last May, and has since been under medical care. He entered a Fargo hospital a month ago, and then underwent a serious operation. He was reported improving but complications set in, causing his death on March 6th leaves to mourn his passing his widow and two children, Helen and Donald, at home. Also surviving are two brothers, John of Fessenden and Walter of Little Falls, Minn.; three sisters, Mrs. Albert Dalueg of Wilton, Mrs. Mae Doyle and Mrs. L. P. Gallagher of Duluth, Minn; two half brothers, Joseph and Lawrence of Holden, Alberta, Canada; four half-sisters, Mrs. Jack Green of Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. Katie Van Hill, Mrs. Walter Klawitter and Anna Litke of Holden, Alberta, Canada.
Mr. Litke was long an active member of the A.O.U.W. lodge of Fessenden, the Fessenden Civic Club and the Elks lodge of Minot. He took a deep interest in community affairs, and was an active worker in many local organizations.
The 1885 Minnesota State Census supports a birth date of Oct 13, 1879.
