ROHWER, Scott E. "Scotty" August 9, 1918 - July 9, 2013 Scotty Rohwer died peacefully on July 9, 2013 at the Rockwood South Retirement Community in Spokane, WA where he had been living for the past nine years. Scotty was born to Pauline Flaig Rohwer and Jacob Ernest Rohwer on August 9, 1918 at the Rohwer Homestead on Rohwer Road near Spangle Washington. After attending the one room Liberty Grade School, Scotty rode his horse to and from Spangle High School where he graduated Valedictorian of his class in June 1936. He then attended Washington State College where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and graduated in Agriculture in June of 1941. After college, Scotty was employed in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Security Administration of the Farm Credit Administration. In September of 1942, Scotty became an Army Air Force Flying Cadet and then entered active duty on August 30, 1943. Following flight training in California and South Carolina, he was deployed overseas to the European Theatre as a B-25 pilot. Scotty flew combat missions during the following Battles/Campaigns: Air Combat Balkans Rome-Arno, Southern France, Air Offensive Europe, and North Apennines. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 7 Oak Leaf Clusters, and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 5 Bronze Stars. The book "Palouse Pilot", written by Nona Hengen of Spangle and first published in 1994, chronicles Scotty's upbringing in Spangle and his military service using as source material Scotty's first-hand diary accounts of each of his 67 combat missions and his letters home to his farm family (Pauline, Jacob and brother Earl) and to his bride-to-be Sara "Bobbie" Hill in Homer, Georgia. After the war, Scotty entered the farming business in the Spangle, Plaza and Rosalia area with his new bride, Bobbie, whom he married on June 24, 1945. Scotty and Bobbie settled on a farm six miles west of Rosalia, Washington and raised a family of three children. Scotty became very active in the community holding offices in the Spangle Grange, Plaza Grange, Washington State Grange, and Rosalia Producers. He was also very supportive of local education serving on the Spangle PTA, Rosalia PTA, and later serving five years on the Rosalia School Board and one year as President of Whitman County School Director's Association. Scotty was also very active in the local Democratic Party. After President Kennedy's election in 1960, Scotty was appointed Postmaster at Rosalia in September, 1961. Scotty served as Postmaster until August, 1978, retiring with 23 years of both military and postal service. He retired from farming in 1982 and moved to Spokane. Scotty touched many lives with his warm friendship and laughter and shared his love of the Palouse Country, wheat farming, Arabian horses and trail riding with family and friends. Scotty and his sons were regular participants on the Chuck Glover "Gentlemen on Horseback" rides from the early 1950's to 1989 riding with a group of fathers and sons from Rosalia. And during his retirement years, Scotty valued his many reunions with his beloved 57th Bomb Wing to reconnect with his WWII comrades. Scotty is survived by his children Robin Rohwer (wife Lorrie) of Spokane, WA, Susan Reba McIntyre (husband Cam) of Seattle, WA and Chris Rohwer (wife Tracy) of Bellevue, WA. Scotty's other survivors include Robin's children Kimberly Rohwer and her son Daniel Mahoney of Bellevue, WA, Jacob Rohwer of Seattle, WA, and Kristin Floyd (husband Ryan) of Seattle, WA; Susan's children Andrew McIntyre (wife Anna) of Seattle, WA and Manny McIntyre of Snohomish, WA; Chris's children Kathryn Rohwer of Bellingham, WA and Scott Rohwer of Bellevue, WA. His wife Bobbie predeceased Scotty in 2008. A graveside service with Military Honors will be held for Scotty at the Spangle Cemetery on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 1:00 PM.
