Joseph ( Joe) Ryan 60 was born on January 8, 1932 to Tom and Margaret (Schofield) Ryan in Dawson. He graduated from Dawson High School with the class of 1954, and enlisted in the United States Navy following high school during the Korean conflict.

In 1958 he was appointed to the Kansas City Missouri Police Dept until his retirement in 1981, after which he moved back to Dawson and ran for the Richardson County Sheriff in the 1982 Primary. In 1985 he moved to Frankfort Kansas and served as Chief of Police until 1987. He then moved to Platte City, Missouri and served as a detective for the Platte County Sheriff's Department from 1987 until his unexpected death.

Joe was a member of the St Therese North Roman Catholic Church in Platte Woods, Missouri. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Joe was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Regional Lodge 50, a member of the Policemans Benefit Association and a member of the Retired Centurions.

He died on August 20, 1992

Joseph Ryan was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Michael in 1973. He is survived by two daughters, Mickie Jo Ryan Smith of Kansas City, Missouri and Annette Ryan Hodges of Sedalia, Missouri. He is also survived by one brother, Bill Ryan of Anchorage Alaska, one sister Eileen Landes of Prairie Village, Kansas and two grandchildren.

A rosary was held at the Rollins Funeral Home in Platte City, Missouri in Platte City on August 23. A funeral mass was held on Monday August 24, 1992 at 10:00 at St Therese Church in Platte Woods with Father Bradley Offutt officiating and a rosary interment at St Mary's Catholic Church in Dawson at 2:00 with burial following in St Mary's cemetery with Father Phillip Luther officiating.

The American flag was presented to his daughters in honor of his duty with the United States Navy/

Honor Guard and pallbearers at the services in Platte Woods were the Kansas City, Missouri police department and the Platte County Sheriff's department. Pallbearers were Tim Landes, Jim Landes, Joe Landes,Jack Landes, Larry Landes, Bert Ramsey and Christopher Riley.

The family suggest memorial contributions to the Caitlyn Thomas liver transplant fund. Caitlyn Thomas is the 7 year old granddaughter of the Platte County Sheriff Tom Thomas.

The Platte County Sheriff's honor guard accompanied the body to Dawson for the burial service. The 30 men and woman in uniform made an impressive sight as they stood guard at the entrance of St Mary's church and at the cemetery as the pallbearers carried the casket to the gravesite. Tears were not uncommon on the faces of Joe's co-workers as they stood at attention and saluted Joe for the last time, showing how much they liked and will miss Joe's always smiling face.

ED NOTE: Joe and I got reacquainted when the family moved back to Dawson in 1981. Since that time we have been in each others homes many times , have bird hunted together, and have enjoyed each others company both in KC and Humboldt. Joe met me at the KCI airport just two weeks ago when I flew to Phoenix. In fact we discussed plans for a hunt this fall. An unexpected death is always tough on the loved ones who are left to mourn, but for Joe, this was a perfect way to leave this life. He was not one to desire sympathy and would have been devastated had he suffered through a lingering recovery.

Goodbye Joe. I'll be thinking of you when the quail fly in the fall................
