DEATH SUMMONS HENRY C. LANDES
Well Known Justice of the Peace Died This Morning at His Residence on High Street
HERE FIFTY-NINE YEARS
Came to Keokuk in 1850 and has Lived Here Continuously, In Long and Useful Life.
At the ripe old age of seventy-seven years, "Judge" Henry Clay Landes passes away at 12:25, shortly past the midnight hours. For the past seven weeks, this well known and highly respected citizen has been ill and his death came as a relief to his constant suffering from rheumatism and which ailment he had been afflicted for over forty years. Tenderly cared for until the last by the loving hand of his favorite niece, Miss Jessie M. Davis, who has been his constant attendant for the past two years, he quietly passed into the better land early today and hundreds in this city who were well acquainted with him, were pained to learn today of the old gentleman's death. Had he lived until January 8, of the new year, he would have reached the seventy-eighth mile stone of his ling and useful life, the most of which had been pass in this city.
Born in Ohio
Born in Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio, January j8, 1832, he acquired a public school education there and came here when a youth nineteen years of age, coming to Keokuk in 1851, and making this city his home continuously ever since. He came to Keokuk, December 20, 1850. He was descended from Pennsylvania, German ancestry, his parents being natives of the keystone state. His father Joseph Lades, served during the war of 1812, and died in 1864. His mother, who bore the maiden name of Eve Weaver, passed away in January, 1877, in Montgomery county, Iowa.
Baker by Trade.
Although not following his calling for a number of years, the deceased by trade, was a baker, and during his first residence here, worked for the U. Raplee Baker company until the year 1854. From that place of business he went to the post office where for nearly two years, he was clerk there under Colonel Paterson, entering the post office department in December, 1854.

In 1856 he left the post office and again engage in the baker business for about a year. For several years after that he was foreman of the Patterson and Timberman port house. In the spring of 1860, he suffered a serious accident, his ankle being crushed in machinery at the Patterson mill and this mishap prevented his entering the civil strife in 1861. He however was sutler with the Twenty-fifth Missouri Infantry which afterward consolidated with Bissels' Engineering Corps. He was stationed at Johnsville, a terminus of the Nashville and Johnsvlle railroad during the construction of that line.

In 1865 he again returned to Keokuk and went to Charleston where for a year he conducted a restaurant. He again returned here the following year. In 1870 he was a turnkey on the police force.
Justice of the Peace
In 1874 he was first elected justice of the peace, but in the following year, resigned and again became a member of the police force and was jailor until 1885.

Afterward he conducted the Fulton market with he sone, for three or four years, and then turned his attention to market gardening which he followed until 1901. Until 1903 he again conducted a restaurant between Fifth and Sixth on Main street until January of 1903, when he again qualified for the office of justice of the peace, which office he has held continuously ever since. An appointment to fill his unexpired term will be made by the board of supervisors.
His Politics
His party was the republican organization and his politics were a part of him, he having staunchly supported prominently for many years in city elections. He was a man who had been connected with the welfare of the city for many years and during his long residence here had seen Keokuk grow to her present healthy condition. All maters of public moment always elicited his fist attention and he was always active in the support of measures for the general good of the city.
Volunteer Fireman.
He served as a volunteer fireman in his early life and was the last president of the Young America Fire Company of this city. During the time of leaving the residence until the cemetery has been reached by the funeral party tomorrow the bells of the fire stations of the city will be tolled iin honor of him who was one of the first members of the fire company in this city. The Young America Fire Company of which he was a member organized in 1856 and disbanded in 1867.

In 1878 he was a member of the police force and was one of the principal one in starting the Sunday afternoon meetings for the policeman and other men of the city, Rev. John Burgess speaking at an hour's service each Sunday afternoon. These meetings were hold in the council chamber and continued for three years. A choir was organized and Mr. Landes because a member.
His Family.
He was married April 29, 1854, at the St. Francisville, No., to Miss Mary Louise Rogers, of this city. She was born in Clinton county, Ohio, and came here in 1846, with her father. Once child was born to them, William H., of Chicago, who has since passed away.

The descendant was raised in the Lutheran faith, but at the time of his death was a member of the Unitarian church.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the late family residence, No. 1121 High street.

Those who survive to mourn the loss of this well known citizen are his wife, Mrs. Mar Landes, who for a number of years has been paralyzed and is at present under the caere of a nurse, his niece, Miss Jessie M Davis, who has been his and his wife's constant attendant for months and nephew, J. Frank Davis, of Mount Vernon, Ill. Brothers, Joseph, of Marshalltown, Luther of Fortr Collins, Colo., and John Landes, of Los Angeles, Cal.

Rev. R. C. McIIwain of St. John's Episcopal church will have charge of the services at the residence tomorrow afternoon.
