While in the Navy, he served on the USS Devastator, as well as several other ships. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was the owner and operator of several businesses in both Orangeburg and Folly Beach, South Carolina, including Murphy's Superette in Orangeburg, along with Turtle Corner, Sea Turtle Variety and Tide Winds in Folly Beach, where he enjoyed meeting and talking with the people entering his store as much as he did selling them something to remember their trip to the beach by. Wesley loved laughing and joking with friends and family and working in his garden, where he waged an ongoing war with the local squirrels. He spent hours watching the birds and other wildlife from his recliner in the room overlooking the pond with his wife, Frances Fogle Murphy.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Wesley (Robin) Murphy, Jr. of Sumter, Troy (Cindi) Murphy of Taylors and Mark (Stephanie) Murphy of Cameron; daughters, Dee Anne (Rob) Miller of Orangeburg and Melody (Chris) Summers of Elloree; step-children, Larry Murphy of Orangeburg, Jackie Murphy of Wilson, North Carolina and Dianne (Allen) Reynolds of Folly Beach; brothers, Heyward Murphy (Katherine) of Columbia and Jack Murphy of Orangeburg; grandchildren, Rachel Murphy, Wesley Murphy III, Charlie Murphy, Jackson, Logan & Harrison "Mutt" Miller, Wesley Troy Murphy, Christopher Summers and Corey and Abbie Reynolds. He predeceased by a great-grandson, Aiden Wesley Vanderhoof.

Wesley was helped in his journey over the last few months by a special angel straight from Heaven, Dianne Franklin, for whom his family will be forever grateful.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cameron Baptist Church Children's playground fund, P.O. Box 395, Cameron, SC 29030.
