Joseph was known to most as "Pappy Joe". His parents were James and Mary (Collins) Myers. Mary's father was Robert Collins. Joe was a wagon farmer and lived on the family farm in the Back Creek Valley. After the death of her husband, James, Mary began to divide the farm into lots and give them to her children. Joseph later bought lot #4 of the farm from his sister Susan. Joe was married three times. His first wife was Ada Catherine Butts. They were married on June 12, 1872. Ada was born February 22, 1857. She was fifteen years old when they married. Joe and Ada had eleven children: six boys and five girls. Ada died January 18, 1896 at the young age of thirty-eight. She died twenty-two days after giving birth to Daisy Bell. Joseph and Ada were married for twenty-four years. Joe married his second wife Susan Ann (Ward) Brown on 7-22-1896. Susan was born in 1854. Her parents were Jacob and Lucille Ward. Susan's first husband was Andrew J. Brown. Andrews parents were Thomas and Martha Brown. In the 1870 census Susan Ward age 22 is living with Sarah Butts age 82 and Elisha Butts age 52. This was the Uncle and grandmother of Joe's first wife Ada Butts. Susan may have been living there helping to care for Sarah. Susan helped raise the remainder of Ada and Joes children.(Aunt Sallie Helferstay raised Daisy Bell.) Susan died at the age of sixty-one after being married to Joe for nineteen years. Two years later on September 16, 1917, Joe married his third wife, Mary Miller. Mary was born in 1894. Mary was twenty-three years old when they married. Mary's parents were Samuel and Jane Miller. The children of Joe and Ada were all grown by now. Joe and Mary began a family of their own. They had three boys, Harry, Harley and Ben. When asked no one recalled Ben or whatever became of him. Joe died three years later on May 17, 1920. Mary later married Andrew R. Bertram on August 14, 1920. Andrew's parents were Samuel and Anne C. Bertram. The 1920 census shows Mary living with Andrew with children Harry, Harley and Ben Myers. Mary and Andrew had one daughter named Bessie. Joe Myers dropped dead while unloading his farm wagon at the market in Martinsburg and is buried at the Tuscarora Presbyterian Church alongside his first wife, Ada and his mother, Mary Myers. Joe's second wife, Susan, is buried at the Mountain Grove Cemetery in the Back Creek Valley. Joes third wife Mary is buried at Weston State Hospital Cemetery where she lived for over 16 years.
