He was born on December 4, 1936 in Bothwell, Utah, son of Henry Andrew Newman and Norma Estella Anderson Newman.
Ned graduated from Bear River High School and Utah State University. He also served an LDS Mission to Wisconsin from 1958 – 1960.
Ned served a distinguished 21 year career in the US Air Force as a navigator, primarily in rescue and recovery. He was stationed in Texas, California, Scotland, Spain, Vietnam, Florida, Utah (where he was an instructor and built a navigator simulator to assist in training), New Mexico, and ended his career in Alaska (where he was a rescue coordinator involved in many high profile rescues). He married Patricia E. Thornock on March 17, 1960 in the Logan LDS Temple. They were the parents of five sons: Kelly, Kristopher, Kent, Kasey and Kimball. Chanar Jigmeddorj came into the family several years ago and is like a daughter to them.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ned held various positions throughout his life, including a two year service mission to the Ogden LDS Cannery with his wife.
Ned was very active in Scouting and was very proud of earning his Wood Badge Beads. He was a very talented carpenter and built two homes, besides the family home, as well as helping to teach carpentry at the OWATC. He also loved the outdoors, particularly fishing in Alaska.
He dearly loved his children and grandchildren and will be deeply missed by all those who knew him.
