COLBURN - Lionel Walter "L.W." Johnson, Jr., 60, died at 6:45 PM Saturday [April 11, 1987] in St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center, Lafayette, where he had been hospitalized four days and in ill-health eight months. Born Dec. 7, 1926, in Lenoir County, NC, he had lived in Colburn 21 years, moving here from Rocky Mount, NC. His [second] marriage was April 8, 1967, to Rosemary Bowyer Cornell.

Mr. Johnson had worked at Alton Box Board in Lafayette 15 years, retiring in July 1986 due to disability. He formerly worked at Brown Rubber Co. for four years. A World War II veteran, he served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946, and in the Air Force from 1947 to 1949.

Surviving with his widow are three sons, Roy W. Johnson of Rocky Mount, NC, Terry R. Johnson of Fort Benning, GA, and George L. Johnson of Tarboro, NC; one daughter, Valerie (Mrs. William) Hochlein of Rocky Mount; six stepsons, Robert D. Cornell, Lloyd "Gary" Cornell, both of Lafayette, David E. Cornell, Ronald W. Cornell, Jeff D. Cornell, and Robert L. Cornell, all of Colburn; six sisters, Christine (Mrs. Eddie) Yeatts of Arlington, VA, Mrs. Grace Mercer of Walstonburg, NC, Helen (Mrs. Eugene) Bunn of Kinston, NC, Shirley (Mrs. Roland) Lucas of Rocky Mount, Molly Johnson of South Carolina, and Elmina (Mrs. Jerry) Wallpe of Fowler; two brothers, Charles of Dover, NC, and Archie Johnson of Orange Park, FL; twenty grandchildren and one great-grandson. Preceded in death by three grandsons, one granddaughter, and one great-grandson.
