DR. GEORGE MITCHELL PASSES FROM EARTH
WELL KNOWN PHYSICIAN AND SURGEON WAS ILL ONLY A FEW DAYS BEFORE REAPER CLAIMED HIM

Dr. George Mitchell, one of the best known citizens of Mansfield, died rather suddenly at his home on West Third St., Friday at 8:10 o'clock. he took cold while attending a lecture Monday night which added to an asthmatic affliction of some years, causing his demise.
The deceased was prominent among the successful physicians of Richland county. He was born at Olivesburg, Richland county July 19, 1837, and was a son of Dr. S.F. and Nancy DeVatte Mitchell. His father was a native of Pennsylvania, but practiced Medicine for forty years in Richland county with great success.
Dr. George mitchell obtained his early education in Mansfield, later going to Ohio Wesleyan University at Deleware, and after four years of study graduated from the institution in 1858 with the degree of A.B. He attended the Western Reserve Medical College at Cleveland, taking one course of lectures and during the following winter entered the Ohio Medical College at Cincinnati, where he was graduated in 1882. Immediately after receiving his degree Dr. Mitchell entered the United States service as assistant surgeon of the 102 O.V.I. He remained in active service in different campaigns until the close of the war, being twice promoted for valuable service. In 1865 he retired from the united States Army and located in Mansfield, where he has since resided and been engaged in the practice of his profession.
The deceased leaves one child, Mrs. C.A. Crawford of Orange, N.J.; also a brother and sister, Dr. William Mitchell of this city and Mrs. H.M. Parker of new York City. His wife preceded him to the great beyond several years ago.
Dr. mitchell was a member of the First M.E. Church of this city and had served the church in various capacities. He was a member of McGlothlin Post, Grand Army of the Republic, and also of the Loyal Union, another soldier group. He was also identified with the Elks, I.O.O.F., and Masonic order. He served as trustee for the central Ohio Insane Asylum, having been appointed by Gov. Hayes in 1876. He was a member of the Ohio State Medical Society, and was one of the censors of the medical department of Wooster University. At the time of his death, he was a trustee for the Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware.
Mr. & Mrs. C.A. Crawford of new Jersey, the latter being the only surviving child,arrived here from N.J. Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. S. L. Stewart officiating.
