"Press-Republican" [Plattsburgh, Clinton Co., NY], 4 Apr 2004:

Plattsburgh -- Grace S. Barrett, 87, of Beekman Towers, passed away on Thursday, April 1, 2004, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

She was born in Plattsburgh on Aug. 8, 1916, daughter of Joseph and Grace [Braisted] Simpson.

Grace had been employed by Baker's Pharmacy for over 17 years. She was a member of the CVPH Auxiliary where she volunteered for over 20 years, retiring at eighty years of age. Grace was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Trinity Episcopal Woman's Club, Trinity Episcopal Alter Guild and Choir.

Grace was an independent, knowledgeable and proud woman. She took great pride in her dress and appearance; and she will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved her and lives she touched. Grace found enjoyment in creating cross stitches, quilts, afghans, was a crossword puzzle enthusiast and a number one Jeopardy fan who amazed everyone with her broad range of knowledge. Jeopardy for those who knew her will never be quite the same. We know also that in her realm of friends and valued people she considered Dr. Bill and his staff as an integral part of her life. Dr. Bill saw her through many crisis; we know she loved him and respected him and considered him not only a doctor but a dear friend. "Her girls" in Dr. Bill's office were also cherished by Grace.

Grace is survived by a son, Stephen Barrett and Jane Kowalowski of Plattsburgh; three daughters and their husbands, Diane Alexander of Conchas, N.M., Arlene Mercadante and Joseph of Crossville, Tenn., Dolores Phillips and Daniel of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother, Ralph Simpson of Plattsburgh; 12 grandchildren, Jeffrey, William, Patrick, Sheri, Maria, Michelle, Michael, Alicia, Stephen Scott, Matthew, Christopher and Joshua; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Grace is also survived by a very close and dear friend, Sharon Twiss and her husband Gary.

Grace was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Garfield L. Barrett; two brothers, Wesley* and Lloyd Simpson; a sister [sic*], Mary Abare; and a granddaughter, Gracey Phillips.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at 1 p.m. from Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. Father John Sorenson, pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Whispering Maples Mausoleum in Plattsburgh.
