Jacob S. Underwood was born on November 4, 1846 in Gaston County, North Carolina. On March 17, 1864 at age 17, he enlisted for Civil War service in Company C, 1st Artillery, 10th Regiment, NC State Troops. He participated in every battle in the Overland Campaign in Virginia from May 1864 through the Petersburg siege, and surrendered with the rest of his unit at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia on April 9, 1865. He returned home and married Hettie Lawing in 1868. They had 10 children. He died on March 4, 1923 and is buried at Robin S. McGee Cemetery on Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road in Mecklenburg County, NC.
