BETTENDORF - Robert J. Cone, of Bettendorf, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at Iowa Masonic Health Facilities, Bettendorf. Celebration of Life services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp Courageous, P. O. Box 418, Monticello, IA 52310-0418, or the Music Department of First Presbyterian Church, Davenport. Mr. Cone was born in 1922 in Milton, Iowa, to Hamilton and Hallie Cone and graduated with the class of '41 from Milton High School. It was then he began his career as a tool and die maker with the Rock Island Arsenal. In the meantime, he served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, enlisting in the Seabee Corps in June 1943, and honorably discharged in February 1946. On October 29, 1955, he was united in marriage to Katherine C. Starr in Davenport. He worked at International Harvester Motor Truck Division for 12 years, and returned to the Arsenal in 1960. He entered the Field Maintenance Services in 1968, retiring in 1988 from the Field Command. For the next two years, he volunteered at the Federal Fish Hatchery in Warm Springs, Georgia. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Davenport, and was a 60 + year member of Roosevelt Lodge and the Mohassan Grotto. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Katherine; son, Steven Jay Cone, of Davenport; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Wright, of Davenport; and brothers, William Cone, of Coal Valley, Ill., and Chris (Darlene) Cone, of Bettendorf. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Dorothy, and a brother, John. The family would like to express their gratitude to the nursing staff at the Iowa Masonic Health Facility and Genesis Hospice for their compassion and care.
