Governor Timmerman immediately appointed J. P. Strom as chief when O.L. Brady announced his retirement as effective July 1, 1956.94 Strom initially focused on traditional crime and supporting local law enforcement agencies. Tracking fugitives with bloodhounds became, during this time, a popular and successful service offered by SLED. It was and remains dangerous work. Sgt. W. L. Buddy Laval Jr. suffered a heart attack while running behind the bloodhounds and died on the trail of someone suspected of shooting a local police chief.
