Highland Recorder December 20, 1929
Mrs. Nettie Stulting Doyle, beloved wife of F. A. Doyle, passed peacefully away October 17, 1929, at her home near Valley Center, Va. Mrs. Doyle was born April 25, 1851, at Hillsboro, (West) Virginia Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hermanus Stulting, were staunch Calvinists who had come to America to escape the persecutions that had arisen from the introduction of liberalism into the theology of the State Church of Holland. Mrs. Doyle was educated at Lewisburg, West Virginia, at the girls’ school which in later years became, Greenbrier College. She was a long advocate of education, and the nine-year period between school days and marriage was spent in conscientious and purposeful teaching in the public schools—not merely as a means of livelihood, but as a golden opportunity for inspiring the young with high ideals, she made use of it as an uplifting influence in her work. In early girlhood she united with Oak Grove Presbyterian Church, at Hillsboro, West Virginia, and shortly after marriage had her membership transferred to Beulah Presbyterian Church, near Valley Center, Virginia. She took an active interest in the work of the church, and attendance upon its services was her greatest delight. When no longer able to go to church, she turned for compensation to services heard over radio. She loved the “Christian Observer” and read it from childhood through out her life. She was married to F. A. Doyle May 18, 1882, and came to the home near Valley Center where she spent forty-seven useful, happy years. Her beautifully impressive funeral service was conducted by a former and beloved pastor, Rev. J. A. Mawhinney now of Naxcra, Virginia. Mrs. Doyle had four sisters and two brothers. Of these Mrs. William Myers of Ronceverte, West Virginia; Mrs. Absalom Sydenstricker, for many years a missionary to China; and Mr. C. J. Stulting of Hillsboro, West Virginia, have preceded her to the Heavenly Home. Two sisters, Mrs. N. J. Doyle and Mrs. John Myers, of Monterey, Virginia, and one brother, Mr. C. L. Stulting, of Alderson, West Virginia, survive. Of her immediate family she is survived by her husband and two daughters, Miss Eugenia Doyle, professional nurse, of Richmond, Virginia, and Mrs. Smiley Williams, of Welch, West Virginia. Those who knew her best knew her as a lover of beauty. She loved beauty of nature, beauty of music and art, beauty of character and thought—and above all, she loved the “Beauty of Holiness.” She sought out and treasured the beautiful and poetic passages of scripture.
