John York is a 15 year old son according to the Nathaniel York family Bible. John York was the third child of eleven children born to Nathaniel York, Sr. and his wife Mary Anne Culberson. John was named after his grandfather who no doubt greatly loved and adored him. He often would visited his grandparents to help out on the farm. It is believed that on his 15th birthday he left his Reed Creek log cabin and went to visit his grandparents on Mount Pleasant Creek. It is possible that he was playing or fishing with his grandfather along the creek and was tragically bitten by a venomous copper head snake and died. It is most likely he died from a very poisonous snake bite from an aggressive copperhead snake that are abundant in that region along the creeks in eastern Randolph County, North Carolina.

Note: The dates for John York are recorded in the Nathaniel York Bible. He was no doubt a favorite grandson of his grandfather John York whom he was named after who is buried in the next row 13 of the cemetery.

If I recall the stone has the inscription “John York” , “age 15” and then the death date of “Feb 1, 1816”. If you enlarge the photo perhaps you can identify some of the inscriptions.

This deteriorating tombstone is from the local Soapstone Mountain Mine.
