Charles Edward "Charlie" Stephens was born on Dec. 20, 1903 near Strunk, Whitley Co. (now McCreary Co.), Kentucky. He was the son of William Whitmill Stephens (1869-1956) and Sarah Jane Wilson (1873-1937), the third of their three known children. Charlie was a brother of Balford Henry Stephens Sr. (1898-1964) and Mittie A. Stephens (1902-1971).
Charlie's father, William, was born near Winfield, Scott Co., Tennessee. He was the son of Alvin Stephens (1840-1883) and Louisa Eldora Cordell (1844-1911). Charlie was the paternal great-grandson of Whitmill Stephens (1809-1866) and Elizabeth Waters (1807-bet 1871/80).
Charlie's mother, Sarah Jane, was born in Pleasant Grove, Scott Co., TN. She was the daughter of Henry Wilson (1851-1895) and Sarena Catherine "Reny" Moses (1848-1905).
On Dec. 24, 1921 Charlie married Martha Jane Wilson (1906-1988). Born in Council, Buchanan Co., Virginia, she was the daughter of Otis Lee "Leotis" Wilson (1884-1922) and Mary Alice Combs (1885-1958).
Charlie and Martha Jane were married on Dec. 24, 1921 in Parksville, Boyle Co., Kentucky. They were married for 66 years and had seven children. They were Virginia Hallie Stephens (1922-2002), Gladys Stella Stephens (1924-2009), Clara Hazel Stephens (1926-1929), Charles Edward Stephens, Jr. (1929-1999), Mildred E. Stephens (1931- ), Mary Ellen Stephens (1940- ) and Grace Ann "Gracie" Stephens (1942- ).
Charlie's wife, Martha died on Sept. 15, 1988 in Wilmington, Clinton Co., Ohio at the age of 82. She wis buried in the Crosson Cemetery in Butlerville, Warren Co., OH.
Charlie died on June 28, 1993 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH at the age of 89. He too, is buried in the Crosson Cemetery, next to his beloved wife, Martha Jane.
