Jane Brotherhood was born in October 1827 in Hounslow, Middlesex (Middlesex County was later dissolved and made part of Greater London County), England. The birthdate on her grave marker is incorrect. Jane's father was William Brotherhood, born about January, 1788, in Whitton Dene, Middlesex, England, who died in 1839 after a fall from his horse. Jane came with her mother, Charlotte Brotherhood (nee Wilder), and siblings William Brotherhood, Harriet Brotherhood, Thomas Brotherhood, Sally Brotherhood and Joshua Brotherhood, to the United States on board the ship Hendrik Hudson. They arrived in the port of New York City on 26 June 1843.
On May 7, 1844, Jane's mother, Charlotte Brotherhood, purchased land in Genesee, Wisconsin where the family lived until coming to the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin in about 1847-48 where they lived on Vliet Street, between 6th and 7th Streets. The address was later 712 Vliet Street. Members of the Brotherhood family reside in the Milwaukee area to this day.
Jane never married.
There is a record of her death recorded in the "Parish Register 1853-1880" of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, p. 106, and reads: "Name-Miss Brotherhood; Time of Death-May 25; Age-About 25; Place of Interment- [left blank]; Officiating Clergyman-W. W. Arnett [Rector of St. Pauls']".
In addition, Find a Grave member, LilyPondLane, on 29 Dec. 1999, called the Forest Home Cemetery office and spoke to a clerk who indicated that cemetery records show Jane Brotherhood's birth date as 26 Oct. 1827, and her date of death was 25 May 1853. The clerk further stated that Jane was originally buried in Section 5 of the cemetery, but that her remains were removed from that location on 28 Nov. 1859, and were re-interred on the Brotherhood lot in Section 16, where they are buried in the same grave as the remains of Jane's mother, Charlotte Brotherhood.

Marion Brotherhood Fraser, Jane's grandniece, remembers a family story that told of Jane injuring her tongue and dying as a result. This story has not been confirmed.---bio contributed by LilyPondLane

Inscription

This transcription was made on May 1, 1988, by LilyPondLane and was copied exactly as it appears on the marker:

(Line 1) Sacred to the Memory's of

(Line 2) CHARLOTTE BROTHERHOOD

(Line 3) Born

(Line 4) Littleton, Middlesx, Eng.

(Line 5) Dec. 16, 1791 [NOTE: THE FINAL "1" IN "1791" MAY ACTUALLY BE A "4"; IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO MAKE OUT; Charlotte's Christening records would seem to bear out the "1794" date as being correct]

(Line 6) Died Apr. 1, 1859

(Line 7) JANE BROTHERHOOD

(Line 8) BORN

(Line 9) Hounslow, Middlesex Eng.

(Line 10) Dec. 26, 1827 [Note: Jane's correct date of birth is October 26, 1827 as shown in the William and Charlotte Brotherhood Family Bible and Forest Home Cemetery records.)

(Line 11) Died May 25, 1853

[Note: there is an illegible quotation, possibly poetic, below the main inscription. It appears to mention something about "my frailties". The author of the quotation is named "M. Merrill Mil--". The last name almost looks like "Milbreaux". The last name, though, is illegible.]
