Billy Ray Swope, 83, of Llano passed away June 8, 2013. He was born to William Ray and Wilma Gentry Swope on May 17, 1930, in Killeen, Texas.

Bill graduated from Killeen ISD with the class of 1949. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. He married Ma’Joyce Rivers on Feb. 19, 1955. Upon his return from Korea, he worked at the Killeen National Bank in Killeen. He then applied to the Texas Game Commission and was hired and assigned to Llano County for the fall hunting season of 1956. He attended a game warden training program at Texas A&M University, graduating in May 1957. He was reassigned to Llano County and enjoyed 23 years of enforcing the state of Texas game and fish laws. He was respected by all landowners and hunters and some of the violators. He proved to be a very effective representative for the department. He retired from service in 1980.

In retirement, he was happy to devote his time to livestock and horses. He trained ponies for polo activity for owners and enjoyed participating in that sport on a pleasure basis. It has been said by many that Bill “had the hands for horse handling.” In his teen years, he worked with veterinarian Darrel Sprott in Bell County, and this influenced his life and love of horses. He also enjoyed the sport of team roping and other rodeo sports. Bill was a member of United Methodist Church of Cherokee, Texas.

Bill is survived by his wife, Ma’Joyce Swope of Llano; daughter, Donna Swope of Llano; sister, LaNelle Carlisle of Harker Heights; niece, Carolyn Martin; nephew, Bob Carlisle; and a very special caregiver, Nikki and her family.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Mary Jane Bruce and J. Henry Swope and Florence Cook and Lee Tillman Gentry.

A memorial service and a celebration of Bill’s life will be held in July on a date to be decided later. Inurnment will be in Baby Head Cemetery in Llano County.
