Joseph's parents were Joseph Cannon I and Abigail Dexter. As a young boy, Joseph's family moved to Suffolk, CT and then to Delaware Co., NY. In 1819, Joseph married Rachel Huyck. They moved to Chicago in 1835, and to Caledonia, Racine Co., WI in 1837. In 1844, he purchased his homesite in Dunkirk, Dane Co., WI from John Wheeler. Rachel died in 1846 and became the first person to be buried in Wheeler Prairie Cemetery, which is a portion of the original Cannon farm. Joseph's service in the War of 1812 was with Farrington's 13th Reg't of the New York Militia.
