GILL, SYLVIA ISABEL GUITO, retired educator and librarian, passed away on August 30, 2005, at age 87. A native Conch, she was born and raised in Key West, Florida, later moving to Miami where she resided for 67 years. As Valedictorian of the class of Key West High School, she traveled to Tallahassee at age 15 to attend Florida State College for Women, now known as Florida State University. She later transferred to the University of Miami, graduating with a bachelor's degree in education. In 1938, she married Michael B. Gill and taught public elementary school until receiving her masters in library science at Case Western University in Ohio. From then until her retirement at age 62, she worked as a public school librarian, for the City of Miami as head librarian of the Grapeland Heights branch, and later head of the reference department for the main branch in Bay Front Park. With an encyclopedic mind, she amazed family with her breadth of knowledge, a precursor to " Ask Jeeves" on the internet. She remained an active supporter of the environment, native plants and flowers as well as political causes. Her husband predeceased her in 1964. She is survived by her son and daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to a fund providing relief to victims of the Katrina Hurricane Disaster.
