His name was James Monroe Isbell according to his mother's affidavit (pension file). Some family trees show his name as James William Isbell, no source shown. One court record reading James M. Isbell was indexed as James W. Isbell.
A number of family trees show his death incorrectly as 1902, and some say 1879.

James Isbell married Mary Cooley 28 Jun 1871 in Franklin Co., TN. In later censuses she is shown Mary L. and Mary C. It's possible her name was Mary ("Molly") Lucinda Cooley. She was the daughter of Elisha Cooley and Elizabeth Eldridge Cooley. Her son William Webster Isbell's death certificate gives her name as Mollie Edison.

In 1880, Mary and her children were living with her mother-in-law (Susannah) Jane Culver Isbell in Franklin Co., TN. but her husband James M. Isbell was not shown. She was listed as married, not divorced or widowed. He is thought to have been in White Co., Arkansas, in 1880. He and Mary were living in Francisco, Jackson Co., Alabama in 1900, 1910, 1920 censuses and evidently died sometime thereafter.

A list of their children provided by a researcher gives the following names and dates:
1 Zachariah A. Isbell born July 1872 (died 12 Jul 1908 Sunset, Montague Co., TX. Lived in Jackson Co. near parents in 1900 census, which gives this birth date and the indication he and Nellie were twins, though the 1880 census implies born c1874)
2 Nellie J Isbell July 1872 (Note: 1880 census shows born 1872 and the first child; apparently they were twins, according to this list, which places him first)
3 William Webster Isbell 1875 – 1952
4 James twin b. Jan 1880
5 Sally twin b. Jan 1880
6 George T. Isbell b: 9 Feb 1888 unmarried in 1920
7 Leora M. Isbell b. Aug. 8, 1896 d. Dec. 10, 1960. She married William Monroe Cox.

Some internet postings refer to him as a musician, a fiddler, and the father of 21 children. There are a number of musicians among his descendants.
He was a great-great-grandfather of William Clayton "Bill" Isbell (of "The Dead Prophets" band) and transgender artist Beth Isbell (BeThisBell).
