exactly what caused the explosion that killed a 45-year-old man and injured three of his
family members Friday night.
Louis Lautenschlager was killed in the 9 p.m. CDT blast,
which occurred about 20 feet from his rural St. Libory house,
patrol spokeswoman Terri Teuber said Saturday.
Lautenschlager was operating a propane-fueled machine to
salvage ammunition cartridges when the explosion occurred,
investigators said.
"The explosion was apparently related to the device, the machine, that uses propane to burn the primer caps," Teuber said.
Two of Lautenschlager's sons 25-year-old Louis
Lautenschlager II, and 22-year-old Albert Lautenschlager
were injured in the blast.
Dennis Anderson, 39, of Idaho, a family relative, also was hurt in the explosion. All three remained in a Grand Island
hospital in stable condition Saturday and were expected to
be released Sunday.
