PALMER — Leonard V. H. Lautenschlager, Sr., 93, of Palmer died Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmer. The Rev. Thomas Clark will officiate. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer. Greenway Funeral Home in Palmer is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Lautenschlager was born April 5, 1920, on the family farm near Palmer to Louis and Luella (Dreiman) Lautenschlager.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna, on April 8, 2007; and a son, Louis Lautenschlager.
Survivors of the immediate family include three sons and a daughter-in-law, Leonard Jr., and Leslie and Charlene Lautenschlager, all of Palmer and Larry Lautenschlager; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Lois Bright of Grand Junction, Colo., Lila and LeRoy Ostendorf of Gothenburg, Leolla and Jim Davis of St. Libory and LaNell and Russ Bateman of Kremmling, Colo.; a daughter-in-law, Julie Lautenschlager of St. Libory; 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Leonard was baptized in the Lutheran faith. He grew up on the family farm and lived his entire 93 years there. He was united in marriage to Edna Reimers on Dec. 10, 1946. To this union eight children were born.
Leonard was a farmer first. He worked several years at the sugar beet factory in Grand Island. When it closed he went to work for Sperry New Holland in Grand Island. At the same time, he also did work for Platte River By Products and for his uncle Bill Lautenschlager assembling farm equipment. He then worked for Dinsdale Brothers. He also sold Tekseed and was a dealer for Archer Oil Company. He retired in 2003.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, playing cards and visiting with people. He loved to dance and listen to polka music.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Palmer, the Platt-Duetsche of Grand Island and Arbor Day Foundation. He was very active in planting trees.
He was also preceded in death by his parents.
