Thomas served with the 125th New York Infantry during the Civil War. He mustered in August 27, 1862, and was taken prisoner of war at Harpers Ferry on September 15 the same year. Paroled on September 16, 1862, Thomas rejoined Company H and served until being discharged due to disability January 25, 1864.

Conflicting information concerning Thomas' marital state have been submitted. One is that Thomas married Estelle H. Adams, and their children include Florence M. Adams, born about 1868. The other suggestion is that Thomas' *brother* was married to Estelle H. Adams.

Thomas worked on his father's farm in Chester.
