Funeral Services will be held Friday for Herbert J. Bates, 71, who died Tuesday at Martha T. Berry Hospital after two weeks illness.

Mr. Bates was born in Mecosta county, the son of the late James and Eva Bates. He formerly lived in Houghton where he operated a sawmill.

In recent years, following his retirement, Mr. Bates made his home with a daughter, Mrs. Cyril Gauthier, of 27535 William P. Rosso highway. His wife, Maude, died in 1925.

Four sons survive Mr. Bates: Carl, Kenneth, Archie and Marion, all of Houghton. Also surviving are two brothers, James, of Big Rapids and Alfred, of Flint; five sisters, Mrs. Amos Buffin, of Big Rapids, Mrs. Roy Barringer, of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Owen Warner, of Big Rapids, Mrs. William Worst, of Grand Rapids, and Mrs. Ethel McCraney, of Cadillac; and eleven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Groesbeck Funeral Home, 228 Crocker Boulevard, Mount Clemens, with the Rev. Frank W. Field officiating. Burial will take place in Clinton Grove cemetery.
