Francis A. Nichols, 79, of 1014 Ripley Ave. died Saturday in Overlook Hospital, Summit, after a long illness.

Born in South Paris, Maine, Mr. Nichols lived in Cranford before moving to Westfield 30 years ago.

An Army veteran of World War I, he retired in 1959 as supervisor of equipment and engineering after 30 years with Western Electric in Kearny and Newark.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Old Guard of Westfield and the Telephone Pioneers of America, and past commander of Capt. N. R. Fiske Post 335, VFW, Cranford.

He was the husband of the late Mrs. Frieda Layendecker Nichols, who did in 1957.

Surviving are a son, Herbert L. of Westfield; three daughters, Mrs. Bertha McClure of Lake Buchanan, Tex., Mrs. Lorraine Bace of Summit and Miss Anne Nichols of Westfield; a sister, Mrs. Marietta Lebroke of Norway, Maine, and six grandchildren.

The Rev. Robert B. Goodwin, minister of the First United Methodist Church, conducted funeral services Tuesday at the
Gray Funeral Home. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery.
